Built in 1717 at the cost of £100 this packhorse bridge was erected by the local estate owner to provide passage over the river for horses and cattle and to enable coffins to be carried over the river to the nearest churchyard. Hence it is sometimes known locally as "the coffin bridge." Although the original parapets were washed away in a flood in the 19th century the bridge remains solid and can be crossed on foot. It provides a source of fun in summer when some brave souls jump from the centre of the bridge into the river!
