Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo while my sister and I were on a hike that we’ve been doing since childhood in Maui, Hawaii. To get to it you have to walk through a golf course and through this tunnel (the tunnel my sister is leaping in) that goes under the high way to the other side where there’s the old golf course that has become overgrown and very forest like in some places. It’s so strange and apocalypse like to be walking through the bones of a dead golf course. But at the top of the hike is a beautiful duck pond and more forest

Time

I think we had started the hike in the morning and this was on our way back so it must have been around noon or 1pm

Lighting

It’s quite ironic, I was actually quite unhappy with the lighting of this photo. The background behind the tunnel is way overexposed, but that’s exactly what made the silhouette of my sister so perfect and what made this shot what it is. I would like to go back one day and get an even better version of this shot

Equipment

I just had my canon rebel t3 around my neck and told her I wanted a shot of her doing one of her gymnastics things hoping to get a silhouette like this, and when she did I just pointed and shot. It did take a couple tries as I was not satisfied with the lighting

Inspiration

My sister was a very talented self taught gymnast always making beautiful poses, bends, and leaps and I saw the contrast between the darkness of the tunnel and the brightness outside it in the background and I wanted to see what kind of magic I could make with that

Editing

Oh, yes. This version of the photo itself is actually an edit of the original one I posted because I still wasn’t satisfied with the lighting. If you go to my profile you can see the original and I believe I even played with the contrast on that before posting it. I just wanted that perfect black and white silhouette so I increased the contrast to make her body black to try to get rid of the light in front of her because it was so bright that day

In my camera bag

I usually carry at least two lenses with me, a 300mm and a 55mm. I also carry a fish eye attachment and a macro attachment. I always have an extra SD card and battery as well. Those are a must. I try to keep a tripod with me for any opportunity to do long exposure or get some lightning shots. Haven’t quite been able to do that yet

Feedback

Play around with light and contrast. If your model has more patience then my sister did, do a bunch of different shots and directions. I wanted to go to the other side of the tunnel and try it from that way but my “model” was done for the day
