I was mowing my grass one day and got lost in my thoughts when the idea hit me. So I grabbed a black sheet and set up out side in my drive way for the shot.Time
It was about midday and it was getting ready to rain so the rush was on to use the prime light before the rain hit.Lighting
The lighting was almost perfect. There was a real heavy overcast as it was getting ready to rain. By the time I snapped the last photo there was water drops on my guitars. I was thankful to get them back inside safely before the heavy rain came through.Equipment
I shot this using my Canon EOS T3 with a 85 mm f/ 1.8 lens. I stood on top of a 6 foot ladder shooting free hand as straight down as I could.Inspiration
I was online one day and saw a photo site that had a challenge for musical instruments and that got me thinking. I wanted to do something I have never seen before, so multiple guitars might be just that. All of these guitars are mine and are a big part of my past. I played in a rock band for 4.5 years and painted the blue flaming guitar and the black and silver bass guitar. I thought it would be a cool way to capture part of my past in a snap of the shutter.Editing
I laid the guitars out in my driveway on a black sheet. As you can imagine getting the wrinkles out of the sheet was quite the challenge. Not to mention I just mowed the grass and yes I couldn't seem to keep it off the sheet. I shot everything back then in JPG and had very little experience in photo editing. Some photo editing was required so I used what little knowledge I had to capture my vision. I set the photo to black and white to help ensure that the sheet would be a deep black with some depth. I removed some grass and a few wrinkles then brought the color back to the guitars. In my camera bag
I now own a Canon 70D and it is my go to body. My every day kinda lens for the unknown is my Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6. It is great when I don't know what I might run into and need a little zoom to capture my dog running or the option of shooting my boys beside me as they are taking pictures. I like to have my Canon 85mm f/1.8 lens for lower light and my new favorite toy is my 70 to 200mm f/2.8 Canon lens that I love to use for sports. My bag also contains a variety of filters, everything from UV to macro filters and so on. I also normally have my tripod for those close up photos seeing how I don't have the most steadiest of hands.Feedback
Things I have learned in the few years I have of shooting is to use your imagination, have fun, and be creative. This pic is special to me seeing how those guitars were a huge part of my past. You might not capture the image you want the first try, but after taking a break while studying your images you probably will see what improvements can be made to go capture your idea.
