Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured on Kangaroo Island off South Australia. The location is Weirs Cove.

Time

It was taken at 1:24pm. Normally I would do this typeof location at sun rise bu there is a curfew on the Island to protect wildlife so you cannot drive after dark or before sunrise. This means you have to shoot whenever you can.

Lighting

The lighting is what was available at that time on that day. Sometimes we just have to accept what nature gives us,

Equipment

This was shot on an Olympus OM Em1 Mk2 with the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 pro lens.

Inspiration

I love any type of abandoned man-made structures. I am always inspired by jetties and especially if there is good wave action like this. I also enjoyed the two Cormorants sitting on the jetty to add some life albeit small.

Editing

The image was first processed in Adobe Camera Raw to set blacks and whites. Then in PS it was sharpened.

In my camera bag

I am an Olympus shooter. At this time i travelled with my EM1 Mk 2 0 which I still have but since I have upgraded to an EM1X which is always in my bag. I still use the Mk2 for macro and landscapes. The EM1X was acquired mainly for wildlife - especially birds. When I'm travelling I typically carry the Olympus 12-100mm lens which does me for landscapes and street. For macro I carry Olympus 60mm lens and for everything else the Olympus 300mm lend with 1.4 and 2x converters. I carry my Olympus on camera flash for fill and a MeFoto travel tripod (which converts to a monopod as required). I also carry ND and PL filters.

Feedback

Always be on the lookout for abandoned structures. Once yo have found it shoot as many angles and compositions as you can. Shoot close, wide, high, low while you are there as you may never get back. Also try different shutter speeds and with water use a PL and ND filters for different effects.
