Did you know Americas first steam locomotive lost its opening race to a horse? The trains engine titled "Tom Thumb" could have driven the train to victory had it not broken a belt in the middle of the race. If youve ever camped in the Gorge you have heard the train as it zooms by all day into the wee hours of the night blaring its horn for all to hear. What can easily be a nuisance to light sleeping campers I think of as a very interesting muse.

Pictures of the Gorge fill me with longing. I was captured by your image right away. I haven't lived there for over 40 years and it hasn't changed. Love this!

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this from an often overlooked overlook at Bridal Veil in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon.

Time

The photos were a combination ranging from golden hour into blue hour.

Lighting

So I wanted the train to be illuminated and snapped that with a quick exposure during golden hour while the sun was still sitting above the mountains in the background. For the sky and trails I waited until the sun was lower than the horizon to get the last bit of color in the sky and to have enough time to get long light light trails across the highway. It took what felt like forever waiting lol!

Equipment

This was a pretty basic setup with no filters, my Nikon D750, a Tokina 16-28mm F2.8, a tripod, and a cable release.

Inspiration

I had visited this place so many times over the last few months with nothing great coming from it until I thought to include a passing train in the frame. I felt combining the still and long exposures really created a unique theme, so much so I have made a series of 3 images of "Transportation in the Gorge".

Editing

Yes I began in lightroom changing color profile, removing chromatic abberations, and doing basic adjustments. From there I moved into photoshop to blend the layers of sky and light trails with the train frozen in motion.

In my camera bag

A Nikon D750, 850, Nikkor 20mm F1.8, Tamron 70-200 F2.8, Tamron 45mm F1.8, 3 Legged Thing Albert Equinox tripod, cable release, and Breakthrough Photography filters including a CPL, 3 and 6 Stop ND.

Feedback

Plan! If you have to visit 5 times to both envision and capture the right conditions do it! I find getting all the wrong conditions makes you plan and tweak the composition closer and closer to what you envision and will make you think of all the elements you can have within a single photo. Be creative, perservere, and execute :)
