Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in Downtown New Orleans outside of the building that 411 First Responders climbed 110 floors during the 3rd Annual New Orleans 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. The memorial stair climb that pays tribute to the 343 firefighters, 60 law enforcement officers, and 8 emergency medical technicians that made the ultimate sacrifice with their lives on September 11th, 2001.

Time

The photo was taken before the First Responders started climbing in all their gear. The climb begins sharply at 8:46 am. 8:46 am is the time the hijackers flew the first plane into the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001.

Lighting

Because the sun was low in the sky, the side lighting added a nice dramatic effect. Additionally, the sunlight hitting the building on the right bounced light between the two buildings adding a very interesting background.

Equipment

This shot was taken with my Canon 5D Mark IV using my Canon 16-35mm F/4 lens. The lens was set at 24mm or so.

Inspiration

We gathered all 411 climbers for a few group shots that I took while on a scissor lift roughly 10 to 15 feet up. After taking the group shots, I noticed the dalmatian was starting to get more playful. Once the lift was lowered, I jumped off and dashed over to this location and started shooting away. Capturing one fireman taking a selfie just adds that little extra something to this photo.

Editing

Post processing was performed in Lightroom. Typical adjustments were made but the biggest adjustment was reducing the highlights down to near -100 since the photo had very dark and very bright areas.

In my camera bag

This was my 2nd year photographing the New Orleans 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb but my first year as the lead photographer. The majority of the time during the event, you are inside the stair wells so minimal equipment is required since you are also climbing. You also can't have too much gear so you don't block the climbers as they did several loops of the stairs (we don't have many super tall building in New Orleans). I carried one camera and two lens (16-35 f/4 and 24-70 f/2.8). I used my 16-35 f/4 for nearly the entire event. Next year, I plan to experiment with use of small flashes if we have a few extra volunteer photographers. It's a true honor to support this cause since the money raised at this event goes to supporting fallen first responders in the New Orleans area.

Feedback

Any one can capture an image like this. This was a live event so you have to "see" things quickly and, more importantly, you must react quickly so you do not lose the moment. As I shot, I got lower and lower to avoid the dark shadows of the climbers behind the first 2 or 3 rows of climbs (sunlight only hit the first few rows of people). I got down really low to give them a bigger than life feel but also to capture as much of the cool lighting bouncing between the two office buildings.
