Location
This was taken in a playground on the seafront at Llanfairfechan in North Wales.Time
3.30pm on a bright sunny FridayLighting
The afternoon sun was bright and my grand-daughter was moving fast on the climbing frame. She was playing hard to get and so I ambushed her as she came out of the stainless steel tube. The light was bright and so I had my settings ready... nice shadows.Equipment
I used a hand-held Olympus EM1 Mkii fitted with an Olympus M.12-100mm f/4 lens.. this is a combination that I use a lot especially for travel photography as it is so adaptable and relatively lightweight ... I used the following camera settings .. f/20 ... FL 34mm ... 1/160sec ... ISO 200Inspiration
Like most people, I like taking photos of my family .. my grand-daughters are very photogenic and like to take candid pictures of them. Eleanor likes having her photo taken now but at the time this was taken of her, she was exercising her right to look elsewhere than at the camera. When that happens one has to resort to tactics and in this case I positioned myself where she would exit the tube. Sure enough she came out and looked at me briefly before looking elsewhere ... to late.... the picture was in the bag... I love the photo ...Editing
I take photos only in RAW and so they have to be processed to be at their best, I use Photoshop as my editing software ... I edited the contrast and sharpening, everything else was ok ..In my camera bag
I usually have at least one Olympus camera and lens, maybe more if the situation dictates. I always use a BlackRapid cross body camera strap for carrying my camera, I favour this strap because it allows the camera to be carried comfortably and my hand is always on or in the vicinity of the camera at my side. I have a tripod but tend to hand-hold most of my photos as my cameras have in-body stabilisation which is useful. I always carry a bulb blower, retractable brush and lens cloth and always use a lens hood.Feedback
Children are unpredictable and it is easy to take photos but a decent background has to be planned ... also depending on the action, the shutter speed has to be sufficient for the capture. Also children do not always play ball by doing what they are asked to do and so a little sneaky ambushing is in order.
