Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Alameda Naval Air base in Alameda, California.

Time

I took this photo in the afternoon (maybe around 3 or 4pm). I was told I couldn't shoot at the naval base unless I was standing on the street or sidewalk, which made it difficult to get the shots I wanted.

Lighting

I don't usually like shooting in the afternoon like this, but I was happy that the lighting wasn't reflecting on any of the glass windows.

Equipment

This was shot with my Sony A7II camera, using a FE 55mm F1.8 ZA Lens. No flash and no tripod.

Inspiration

I just got a Dodge Challenger and wanted to do some warehouse type shots with it. I knew the naval base had a look of cool areas like this. This particular photo I was inspired to shoot because I loved the giant doors and how small they made my car look.

Editing

I shoot is raw so I always do some color adjustments. This image I went a little further and straightened the perspective on the doors so they stood straight up.

In my camera bag

I'm all over the place. Sometimes I shoot with my Sony A7II and whatever lens I feel like using that day. Other times I shoot with my Light L16 camera. Most often however, I am snapping away with my iPhone since it's always with me. I also own like 30 other miscellaneous cameras that I shoot with from time to time.

Feedback

Shooting a car at a place like an old naval base can have its difficulties. Many of the locations that look great are technically off limits. My advice is to try to get the shots you want and if security approaches you, be nice and ask for advice on where is ok to shoot. Often they will suggest some stuff that you didn't even know about.
