Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia. I do not know the girl in the photo, she was just sat there taking in the sunrise. The fact that she is not a modelling posing gives the picture more impact and adds to the isolation theme as she is genuinely alone. I wonder what she was thinking that morning?

Time

Taken at sunrise around 6am. I wanted a string composition to match the epicness of the sunrise and when I spotted the girl sitting there it was too good an opportunity to miss.

Lighting

The sky was on fire that morning. There are so many shots of Bondi usually wider showing the whole beach so I really wanted to grab something special as you don't see sunrises like this every day.

Equipment

Shot on a Canon 5D3 with a 70-200mm Canon lens.

Inspiration

I do not know the girl in the photo, she was just sat there taking in the sunrise. The fact that she is not a model posing gives the picture more impact and adds to the isolation theme as she is genuinely alone. I wonder what she was thinking that morning?

Editing

I raised the shadows as she was a little dark against the bright sunrise but that's it.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon 5D3 body, a telephoto lens, a 16-35mm wide and a 100mm macro. A tripod and spare batteries are always with me as well as 2 memory cards.

Feedback

Get up early and find a composition and wait for the sun to rise. If you leave it too late and are rushing to find a good shot you won't get the shot you desire. I will sometimes even scope out a location the day before so that if I arrive in the dark at sunrise I know exactly where to go.
