Red Rocks is a second home of sorts to me. Great shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado. the place turns into a exercise facility during the day.

Time

This one was taken mid morning which made isolating the subject very difficult due to the large amount of people there.

Lighting

It was slightly overcast but the conditions were good and consistent which helped me a lot.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D7100 paired with my Tokina 100mm lens. It was bright enough out so I could use a higher shutter speed and actually catch the individual. I also used my feet to position myself as best as I could since I was using a prime lens.

Inspiration

I was wanting a change of scenery and chose to go up to Red Rocks due to the unique perspectives there. I started with taking pictures of the amphitheater first. I found that they looked nice but weren't very interesting. I then decided to capture a moving subject as well as the architecture (which I found was easier said than done). I had to be very patient as I looked for the perfect moment and spent about an hour waiting. Overall, I think that it was worth it.

Editing

I used Lightroom to go and make this one black and white. I debated about leaving it in color but found that the shadows made for a much more surreal looking shot. I slightly brought out the darks and pushed the highlights so that there would be some contrast. I love contrast. I also went through with a brush on the subject to help bring his exposure up to give the photo more of a focal point.

In my camera bag

I have a Nikon D7100 that I bought used on Craigslist for 400 dollars around a year ago. That was a steal if you ask me. I also normally carry three lenses with me: a Tokina 11-16, a Nikkor 50mm and a Tokina 100mm. I find myself using the 11-16 most as I like the unique perspective it gives when up close to subjects. My 50mm would come next in use. It is a good street photography lens. My 100mm is used least but i always keep it handy in case I find something that requires it. This photo is a prime example of why I keep it around.

Feedback

This shot, like many others, required a lot of patience. I spent some time thinking about what I wanted to capture and then picked up my camera. I don't always do this, but I felt it was somewhat necessary due to the amount of people there. I would also say that having a unique location does not mean you have an amazing photo. I am slowly learning how important it is to take that location and find a different perspective. This is what makes a photo more interesting and is what makes what we do an art form. Again, I am only just realizing this myself, but I feel this mind set will help me take more captivating shots in the future.
