Location
This photo was taken of the Vestrahorn Mountains in Iceland. I was touring there with a group of girlfriends and an awesome guide.Time
Our fantastic guide was from Iceland, and is a well known photographer there. he drove us from place to place, looking for the best morning and evening light. This photo was taken at sunset, which the guide said was one of the best ones he had ever seen--lucky us!Lighting
One thing about visiting Iceland in the winter is the short days. The sun comes up late in the morning and just seems to move across the sky without getting very high. If there happens to be clouds, you can get beautiful colors in the sky for most of the day. On this evening the sunset colors became just spectacular.Equipment
At the time I took this I was using a Sony A65, with a Tamron 28-300mm lens, and a Sirui tripod. I really like this lens as an everyday walk around lens, to be ready for whatever comes along.Inspiration
I loved Iceland. As we drove along we had mountains on one side of our vehicle and many times the ocean on the other. I also love images with reflections in them, and when it is a mountain reflecting I am even more happy! I found this water pond in the black sand earlier and knew if it looked like we would have a nice sunset I wanted to come back to this spot. After I got myself set up for the shot, the guide came and set up along beside me--I then knew I was in a good location!Editing
I just use picassa for post processing and maybe just worked with the contrast a bit in this image. In my camera bag
When traveling I always bring along an extra camera body-just in case. Like I said I like this all around lens, plus I carry and 14mm wide angle lens, and not for this trip, but others I take along my 150-600mm zoom for wildlife. I did not use any filters for this image, but I do carry with me a polarizer and a split neutral density filter.Feedback
I can just say that when traveling to a new area, you just have to be prepared for anything and it always helps to have a knowledgeable guide.
