Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo West of Saskatoon, Canada. I am in love with this country and the skies it gives me.

Time

This image was taken at approximately 2:00am when the skies are at the darkest and uninhibited by cars or buildings lit up.

Lighting

The lighting was all in the sky. Taking this picture I couldn't see ten feet in front of me.

Equipment

I used my trusty heavy duty tripod for a secure base and my beloved Nikon D750. The camera has a great low light sensor and I've been impressed from beginning using this model.

Inspiration

I have taken a similar image in the same spot over a year previous from this one. This image was my reimagining of that shot done with more technique.

Editing

I used a simple Lightroom CC workflow I use with most of my night photography edits.

In my camera bag

Soft clothes, remote shutter control, various lenses, extra batteries due to the cold and a spare camera body just in case

Feedback

Play. That's my advice. I usually shoot at 12-15 seconds for Aurora shots but depending on the lens used, I shoot 30 seconds or more without having to worry about streaked stars.
