Location
I shot this photo on a cold winter evening at an abandoned train station on the Coffs Coast, NSW Australia.Time
In order to capture the milky way with such vibrant clarity I timed the photo session around the new moon. This meant that there was very little light and allowed the stars to dominate the night sky. I checked the forecast for clear skies free of clouds.Lighting
There is an active train-line beside the abandoned line where this old carriage sits. The red glow on the carriage is from the crossing lights further down the line. I used this to my advantage seeing as it was pitch black. The red light gave me enough light to find my focus point. I also used an LED torch to light paint the shadow areas of the foreground and help reveal some details.Equipment
Canon 6D with Canon 16-35/2.8 wide angle lens attached to my MeFoto tripod. I also used a cable release.Inspiration
I love photographing the night sky especially the milky way whenever the conditions allow me to do so. I also enjoy exploring abandoned locations and love old trains. I suppose my love for nature and the above led me to capturing this image.Editing
I did minimal processing to the image. The biggest adjustment would have been contrast and curves to selectively highlight the stars and give them more 'pop'.In my camera bag
Back then when this was taken I was primarily shooting with Canon DSLR cameras, although since then I've switched over to Mirrorless. My kit now consists of the Fujifilm XT2 and an array of prime lenses. If I were to reshoot this scene with my new gear I'd opt for my 10-24mm zoom lens.Feedback
Just get out and start exploring and looking for interesting locations. It is best to visit during the day to scope out potential compositions though. It can be tricky visiting a new location in the dark so I always suggest making a day trip to suss out some good vantage points prior to the shoot. Bring some warm clothes and coffee (it seems to always help me wait out the cold).
