Location
I took this photo in Hackberry, Arizona at an old historic gas station.Time
I took this photo during golden hour, my favorite time to take photos.Lighting
I use natural light and looked for a spot that wasn't too bright. The sun had just set so I was able to face him toward the light without getting the squinty eye look.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D and my 85 1.2.Inspiration
I was intentionally trying to compare old to new. The old grittiness of a gas station in contrast of the soft skin of a baby. I love texture and this photo is full of it!Editing
This photo was pretty great straight out of camera. I love to bring textures out, so I really put my focus on enhancing the grittiness of the gas station. I was initially going to keep this photo as color, but when I converted it to b&w, I was completely sold. I brought up the contrast a ton in this photo. In my camera bag
For outdoors I always bring my 85mm and my 70-200. I love both lenses and use them all the time. I will carry a reflector, but rarely use it. My camera is a canon 6D.Feedback
This photo was taken at the end of a shoot. Everyone was relaxed and I had the bulk of my photos taken. Since there was no pressure to get a particular shot, I just experimented. Sitting back and just being an observer makes such a difference in photography. It gives me a moment to really think and plan for a photo.
