Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo outside of Kingman, AZ in an area coined as Black Bridge.

Time

I took this photo just after the sun dipped below the mountains so the light wasn't harsh, but soft and glowey or glowee....glowey totally needs to be a word.

Lighting

I placed my daughter with her back directly behind the sun. It is hard to tell, but there is a bridge right behind her and it framed the setting sun perfectly creating a neat effect. I waited till the sun was just setting or even partially behind the mountains and it cast this beautiful soft golden light.

Equipment

I own a Canon 6D and used my 70-200mm lens set at 190mm. The settings were iso 400 f2.8 at 1/160(erp, a little low, but it turned out tack sharp). I didn't use a reflector or flash with this image.

Inspiration

I took this photo just as the weather started warming up and was hoping for wild flowers. I didn't find any, but made use of the beautiful textures or Arizona.

Editing

Yes, I do quite a bit and it involves a lot of layers and masking. I always want my images to be rich of color and emotion and I try to post process to reflect that.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 6D, my 70-200 2.8, 85mm 1.2, Sigma Art 50, Sigma Art 35, and my 24-70 2.8

Feedback

My advice is to be patient and ready. My daughter was sitting here waiting for me to take her photo, she wasn't posed, she was just being herself. I saw her and immediately wanted to capture the moment and I did. Sitting back and just being present in the moment is the best advice that I can give, oh and make sure your lens cap is off. ;)
