Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in my improvised home studio. I have the second bedroom of my apartment converted into a studio. I basically designed my studio with the style of lighting, of this photo in mind.

Time

This would probably have been an evening shot, since that is the most convenient times for me to shoot. I am a graphic designer during day, and do photography as a hobby. Although I take it very seriously, and I am constantly trying to improve.

Lighting

My lighting is very low tech. It basically consists of one or two very bright, continuous LED lights. Low cost, but effective to get the old school Hollywood like I was aiming for. This shot was taken with the light on a boom overhead and to the side of the models.

Equipment

This photo was taken with a Nikon D3100, a Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G lens, Hand held, and lighting as stated above continuous LEDs

Inspiration

My lighting style is inspired by George Hurrell, and the old Hollywood photographers. When taking this shot I wanted to take that a step further, and show the couple almost as one with the use of shadows. Kinda going for a two person bodyscape abstract type of vibe.

Editing

I try to do very minimal post-processing with my portraits. I want to keep the subjects as natural looking as possible. I believe the only post processing done on this photo was brightness contrast to make the lighting pop a bit. Then a very light skin softening.

In my camera bag

I am a believer that with a little creativity and imagination, you can achieve a lot with a little. My go to lens that is on my camera 95% of the time is my Nikkor 35mm prime lens. I get a little more exercise running towards and away from the model to compose the shot, but love the results of that lens for the price. Other lenses in my bag are the kit lens 18-55mm, Nikkor 55MM prime, and a Tamron 70-30mm.beyond lenses I carry a flash, extra batteries and memory cards, lens brush, and sun screen for my fair skin.

Feedback

My best advice is to be creative, know up front what you want to achieve and don't be afraid to improvise. When I got into photography I couldn't afford high end lights, but I knew the look I wanted to achieve. So I experimented with some inexpensive, but super bright lights that I found online. I even had to fashion barn doors out of plastic, to focus the light in the way I wanted. In the case of these types of shots, I usually have the models pose in a interesting way. I then maneuver the lights around them, to cast pleasing shadows, and light only the parts I want lit.
