"Little Women". Great capture of personality...the family leader always in the spotlight...the youngest always demanding attention...the spirited one, always in a world of her own. Very sweet.

Behind The Lens

Location

Taken at home, Whiston, UK.

Time

The girls were on holiday from school and it was just after breakfast when they where getting their hair brushed out, ready for the day ahead.

Lighting

The natural light in this room is wonderful, it changes throughout the day. The window behind me faces south and gets the sun through the year. If it is too bright I can adjust the venetian blinds to either dim or brighten. Behind the girls is another window which gets all the light coming through from the conservatory. This light is more diffused. I like working with natural light but if I need studio lights (which is rare) I can always borrow my sons - he has loads.

Equipment

I have one camera and it's the Fujifilm X100s. For this shot the camera was hand held with no flash.

Inspiration

These are three of my granddaughters and we all live together (with my son and his wife) so I have plenty of photo opportunities with these live wires. The two oldest (Elizabeth sitting and Olivia standing) where fooling around with their hairbrushes. One of their favourite songs came on the radio and they started singing along and using their hairbrushes as pretend microphones. I grabbed my camera and focused on Olivia as she danced around. Just as I was about to click, Isla, the youngest at 3 years, jumped into my view and got herself in the pic. Hence the title as she often photo bombs. I like the look of this image because there is so much to see. The detail in the wooden floor, the slight movement of Olivia's dress, the reflection of Olivia in the window, Olly the Polly in his cage in the conservatory and more besides.

Editing

I did process this image through Lightroom. I use presets. Some are my own and some I have bought. I can't remember exactly what I did but looking at the image I think I may have used a faux HDR preset (after turning it to mono, of course). I also cropped to make the composition tighter.

In my camera bag

Well not much to say about what I have in my bag, don't even use a proper camera bag now. I used to have a Nikon D300 and a couple of lenses, along with the kitchen sink in a proper camera bag. Then I went up Snowden, (for non-UK readers that's a big mountain in Wales) with my proper camera bag filled with the kitchen sink and accessories and I came back down a reformed woman. Thought - I am getting to old for this palaver and eventually sold everything and bought the Fuji. All I have in my bag (handbag) now is the Fuji, camera cloth, spare batteries and cards and that's it. I travel light.

Feedback

Advice - well all I can say is to go with the flow. Just shoot away. You will get loads of duds but every so often there is always one that will pop out at you. Shooting stuff that is happening naturally is so much more fun for me because I don't know what I have until I start to process. I rarely bother to look at any shots on the camera screen when I am shooting candid. The only time I do look at my shots as they are taken is when I am shooting portraits after all who wants a fuzzy face. (Isla of course)
