Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo a few years ago in the conservatory of my home where the lighting is good.

Time

It was sometime in the afternoon when the light is more mellow.

Lighting

Because it is a conservatory the light comes in on 3 sides and depending on the time of day the light can be bright but cold or mellow and warm. Just like being outside, really but without the breeze, so everything sits still.

Equipment

The camera I used was my very first DSLR and it was an Olympus E510 with a kit lens 40-150 mm. Mounted on tripod. No flash was used as I just wanted the natural light. Used a tile mirror to stand the vase and flowers on, for the reflection and a black sheet as a back drop.

Inspiration

I had only just got my first DSLR so I wanted to experiment with everything and anything. Flowers are a good subject - they do as they are told and don't blink, cough, sneeze or generally move in an unwanted direction.

Editing

My post processing skills at the time (2009) were pretty dodgy and if I remember rightly I darkened the background as best I could and increased saturation. Eventually, I think I got a software that I used to turn it to black and white and I experimented with different types of black and white till I got what I waned.

In my camera bag

Since I have had the Olympus I have had a Nikon D300 with Tamron and Sigman lenses. But nowadays I have the Fujifilm X100s because it is small and light enough to fit in my handbag with just a couple of spare batteries.

Feedback

If you want to capture somthing similar - well all I can say is experiment, again, again, and again. Try all sorts of flowers and interesting vases for texture and variety. When processing make them strong and bold to bring out the character of the flower.
