Behind The Lens

Location

This Rock is called Johan Skytt, and is located above the village of Alnes which you see below and behind me in the photo. Alnes is a village on the island of Godøya Right outside of Ålesund and takes a half hour to drive to from the city sentrum. To get to the island you need to take 3 underwater tunnels and a bridge and another regular tunnel to this side of the island. Hiking up to this point takes about 45 minutes from the town chapel. This village is most famously known for its light house the Alnes Fyr. The most photographed Lighthouse in Norway.

Time

This was in late spring after a small snow and was about 5 or 6 in the afternoon on an overcast day though a sunset would make it more magical. I like regular light as well as long it isn't too harsh. =D

Lighting

I took the light available and bracketed with what I got but with even lighting I had no complaints.

Equipment

Canon 550d with the Sigma art 18-35 paired with a surui tripod. Very Simple set up, but what I didn't special here was tying my tripod to a rock as I was very close to the edge so I made sure I was secure and the camera while positioning it. especially since there was a recent snow and it was so close to the edge I dont want to be a photographer that fell off a mountain to catch a photo. so if Im on a trip I know I might be going close to an edge I bring my climbing rope.

Inspiration

I found out about the image on google, hehe even though it is close by. but most of the images I found weren't very flattering of the location so I wanted to do it justice. But since my planning of the image several photographers from the area I admire have also captured some nice images from the location.

Editing

Though none of them have a composition like this. because I really wanted to be looking up to the model (myself) in the image rather than downward. I wanted to give a size for the rock and this angle while having the village below and not to the side. but that was not possible without going even closer to the edge than I dared. So I ended up taking an image of the background and sequence for the foreground and model and seamlessly combined the two compositions into one.

In my camera bag

The last year it has just been my canon 550d sigma art 18-35mm and surui tripod along with some yongnuo flashes, extra SD cards, rope, steal wool, and survival kit.

Feedback

be safe, and if you ever feel you dont have 100 percent control take safe measures, and use rope or dont take the image. No picture is worth dying for. Do what I did rather and combine images to tell the story than sacrificing your safety. and learn how to retouch a rope away if need be. I didn't need to do that here. When having a model in your landscape trying to get nice curves or straight lines in the pose, the more angles the better as it helps differentiate the limbs from the body and brings more life to the image. and get little nooks of negative space in there as well =D. Look for treasures on google maps and images before going to a place to find out what is there as well to learn what you should do different so you are not copying what others have already done.
