These shots were taken at an airshow at the Roskilde Airport in Denmark, which happens to be "my local airport" as well. The airshow had everything from veterans and warbirds, to helicopters and the latest state-of-the-art fighter jets, so there was something great to look at for anyone who's into aircraft.Time
This was shot in the morning, before the gates opened, so I did have the luxury of mostly unobstructed views of the planesLighting
Shooting outdoors and specifically at airshows, I guess you have to take what you got and apply your technique in order to create something that's worth looking at. At least, with this cloud cover, you don't have to worry about the shadows going too dark (Well, shooting medium format digital really helps too).Equipment
Hasselblad H4D aeroInspiration
Well, I love these old warbirds - especially the P51 Mustang. The color and texture of the tarmac seemed a nice contrast, as did the Merlin rescue helicopter with the dark cloud backdrop, so drama was generated and I got my shots.Editing
A clean clipping path, a bit of layer masking and basic file clean-up but nothing really too crazy went into this two-image composite. Shot on the same day, lighting was consistent enough, so no worries on that account. In my camera bag
Phase One XF, IQ350 back, Schneider 28, 55 and 110 lenses. Sony RX100III, color checker, LEE BigStopper, Berlebach mini wooden tripod, Lastolite reflector and when the occasion calls for it, a Sunbounce frame with various covers.Feedback
Get there before the crowds, or stay after hours if you can. Figure out your shot ahead of time, so you have the appropriate gear with you (at this show, I found myself wishing I'd brought a step ladder as well). Also, make sure you have the permissions and access sorted out before you go. But then of course - you could just WING it ;)
