Behind The Lens

Location

In September, I spent two weeks traveling through Vietnam on their North/South Reunification line. One of the first stops was in Hue, the home of the Imperial City.

Time

We had a short two days in Hue and wanted to make the most of our time. We took an afternoon dragon boat over to the pagoda and then over to the Imperial City. It was a beautiful afternoon but super hot.

Lighting

I saw the woman walking toward the hallway and the lighting coming through the arches was perfect. She stepped into the hall and I snapped the shot.

Equipment

I am a Canon girl (have been and always will be) and for the past two years have used a Canon 7D (which is proving to be indestructable)! The Canon 28-135mm lens was used for this particular shot.

Inspiration

Between the lighting and the composition, the photo was a must. There were so many amazing shots taken during our time at the Imperial City but this one still speaks to me.

Editing

My strategy with photography is to try to create the best possible image with the camera, lighting, and composure that minimal post-processing needs to be done. With this image, I did a bit of sharpening and brightening before taking it to black and white.

In my camera bag

I used to have a lot of equipment but when we decided to leave the U.S. last year on an epic world journey (one year of non-stop travel), I pared down my equipment as I needed to be able to carry everything as well as my laptop, iPad, etc...I now carry four lens (Canon 28-135mm, Tokina 11-16mm, Canon 50mm macro, & Canon 100-300mm). I carry two batteries with me at all times as well as four compact flash cards. Additionally, I carry a tripod as I like to shoot video as well with my Canon 7D.

Feedback

Shoot a lot and from various angles. It doesn't cost anything! Shooting in Vietnam was super easy as everyone is friendly. Take time to set up your shots and envision what you want the outcome to look like.
