Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my home, I had adopted a cat a couple months prior knowing she had been spayed. Turns out she was not and had 5 adorable kittens in my closet. My love of photography led me to document the entire 8 weeks of kitten-hood with mommy cat. This day the orange kitten was learning to lap milk and I caught Momma cat licking her face clean.

Time

I would sit and watch the kittens several times a day and have captured many images along the way of this documentation of the first 8 weeks of the kittens. I have gone back to one of the new owners and photographed the gray kitten now one year old.

Lighting

I laid the colorful polka dot blanket behind the area that the kittens were to add a soft and happy feeling to the image.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 7d and used my 24mm-124mm lens for this image.

Inspiration

My inspiration came after my frustration of knowing I had 8 weeks to care for kittens. I decided to make good of the situation by documenting everything from the birth to the 8 week mark when I found amazing homes for them all. With the help of my grandchildren we socialized them well with hours of playing and also exposed the kittens to my German Shepherd dog. She would lick the kittens all over and sit with them and momma cat seems to enjoy the break. She sat close by watching the kittens with my dog, happily resting.

Editing

For this image there was no real post processing. But in general I use Lightroom or Photoshop and other editing programs to edit clients images.

In my camera bag

As I like to be prepared for anything, I usually carry several lens in my camera bag . I love my 50mm lens for many types of photography. I also carry a wide angle lens for landscape images. I love using my 100-400mm for wildlife and I also carry my 24-124 mm. I use a 600EX-Rt Speedlite when I need flash or fill.

Feedback

When photographing animals in general one needs to be very patient and willing to spend a bit of time to capture that special image. It takes time to connect with that pet client and have them feel safe with you. I have also learned after many years of photographing animals that they will give you what they give. You cannot 'pose' a pet , you must be willing to sit, watch, wait and let the magic happen.
