Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was awesome and so much fun to take. This was taken at Hempstead Lake State Park on Long Island, New York.

Time

Usually I try to shoot during golden hour. Luckily though, we were there on site a little earlier and were just playing around with some ideas. This was the result of that.

Lighting

There was nothing particularly special about the lighting. We just made sure to have the model face away from the sun so that it wouldn't blind her as we were shooting. Otherwise it was all natural light with no modifiers.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D7000 with a 105mm f/2 Macro lens. Freehand, no tripod or any additional flash.

Inspiration

What really inspired us to take this photo was that our model decided to take a walk out over a branch which was hanging over the water a little bit. At first view it was a very surreal setting. She was just waiting as we set everything up. She would just playfully dangle and walk along. So the inspiration was that we said to ourselves that this was a "first steps" shoot. And that's where we got our inspiration for taking that first step so to speak.

Editing

We did very minimal post processing. We lightened up some of the shadows that were cast on the front of the boot, and just added a touch of contrast.

In my camera bag

It really depends on the job on what I usually have in my bag. On short trips I usually carry 1 Nikon D7000, 24-70mm f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8 On more extensive trips I add to that a second Nikon D7000 body, SB900 Speedlight, 105mm f/2 Macro

Feedback

My only advice to capturing something like this is to keep an eye out for the moments that you are NOT planning on shooting. Sometimes the best shots come when you, and everyone else for that matter least expect it. Try to keep an open mind and just shoot away. The best opportunities not always reveal themselves that easily.
