Behind The Lens

Location

This Photograph was taken by me at a Monastery in Bhutan .

Time

The Photograph was taken at Mid day.

Lighting

The lighting was magical, there was a long corridor which led up to steps to the next level, there were shafts of sunlight coming into the corridor at various places, the rest of the light was beautifully defused because of the height of the ceilings and the bouncing effect from the corridor walls.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D 300 Camera Body and a Nikon 70-200mm f 2.8 VR II Lens, fully zoomed to 200mm.

Inspiration

I think it was the moment, the apprentice was running to his classes and I was trying to keep out of sight, he just turned and I tripped the shutter which was on Continuous Low, and I bagged the shot I was looking for, his expression says it all and made the moment magical for me .

Editing

I try to minimise the attraction to post process and still believe that you must get the exposure right the first time, I meter carefully, frame as best as I can and shoot, post that, I sometimes crop, enhance contrast here and there, in this particular shot it is minimal.

In my camera bag

I am Nikon man, I generally carry a DSLR like the one I used for this shot (Nikon D 300), a Nikon 24-120mm, f 4 VR Lens, A 70-200mm, f 2.8mm, VR II Lens, and a wide angle Lens, on this particular trip I used a Tokina 11-16mm ,f 2.8 DX Lens. I also carry either 60mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor or the 105mm f 2.8, Micro Nikkor

Feedback

I would advise shoot, shoot and shoot more! Be alert to the surroundings, see what is in front of you, what lies beyond, look from different view points if you have the luxury of some spare time and be attentive to what might you be looking for. e.g., since I was in this Monastery, I looked for Monks, for paintings, for doorways for steps, for holy books, accessories, sandals, corridors and who might just step out, where the important parts of the Monastery were, and above all keep the hand ready to lift , focus and shoot, finally if you are in a place of Worship, respect the surrounding as you would in your church in your country.
