Behind The Lens

Location

I took this Photograph one sunny Morning in the Beautiful Greek Island of Mykonos. The Island is quaint with brightly painted houses and the woodwork in beautiful shades of blue, red and yellow. The sights just lift your mood and the air around if packed with warmth, mystique, laughter and Love, You feel this instantly, it's difficult to describe , it just leaps out at you. I walked the by lanes and admired the houses, the people are very friendly and welcoming, the pace is slow, it helps you soak in the beauty and the peace, it slowly embraces you and before you know it, you are hooked and do not want to go, there is a local saying , You will surely return to Mykonos, just look back as you sail away !

Time

It was mid morning, the light was reflecting from the houses , which are white washed in white, emphasising the colours around and if you shoot on Aperture priority mode, you will surely over expose, the trick is to go manual, see the image as it unfolds before you with control over the aperture and ISO, the angles often pose a problem as the space is constrained, a wide angled lens is a must.

Lighting

The lighting was challenging as with first brush you are so enamoured with the sights, you just tend to point and shoot, for two reasons there are people walking the streets and other photographers also shooting. The lighting is challenging as the white walls reflect the sunlight and one tends to over expose if you merely usr Aperture mode, here Manual is preferred as you can fire off shots at different combinations of the Three Aces in photography Speed, Aperture & ISO.

Equipment

The camera was a Nikon D 800, the lens was a 24-120 mm F4 Nikkor and the camera was hand held. I generally shoot at 125th of a second in such situations and light levels and compensate/adjust the aperture/ISO

Inspiration

The sheer beauty as i mentioned before the place draws you in , the atmosphere charming, the peace, the colours, the warmth, the people, the mystique in the air just stops you in your racks, there was not one moment that my eye was off the view finder, from street to street, to small alleyways to by lanes, to give you an idea , some lanes are so small that it just about allows two people to cross each other.

Editing

I am a little old school, I believe you must try and convey what you want from the frame the first time around without any corrections, however, I must admit the post processing now affords you the luxury of playing around too much, I do post process but very minimal, framing, contrast, rarely exposure correction and sometimes to compensate for the overall balance in the photograph.

In my camera bag

For travel photography I carry two Camera bodies, of recent I find myself using my Olympus micro four third system a lot, a fast prime lens , a medium zoom lens, a telephoto zoom lens, a small flash gun, spare batteries, double the number of flash cards, I would need, and a carbon fibre tripod , not a very heavy one but one that folds into 4 segments into my suitcase, the one I have doubles for a mono pod as well so its very useful.

Feedback

Shoot shoot and shoot more, go down the less travelled track, don't worry you wont get lost, avoid crowds, do two sorties a day for actual photography one at 6 am and the other around 5 pm ( subject to local sunrise and sun set times ) for actual shooting, the rest of the day for casual street photography, here remember to carry the fast prime lens,. In the late evening naturally carry the flash, and the prime lens, my Micro four thirds gives me great images even at ISO 6400 , with the prime lens so i rarely use the flash gun. Remember besides the Three Aces in Photography, Shutter speed, Aperture and ISO there are no limits, so just go out there and shoot, don't for God sake count the number of frames you take , to give you some comfort or amazement, I generally tend to shoot at continuous low shutter settings, and I can easily go through around 300 GB on a vacation trip around 10 to 15 days with a smile.
