I took this image at the Empire Fulton Ferry next to the Brooklyn Bridge after a day spent walking around lower Manhatten with friends visiting from Florida.Time
Around 5pm in late December I was lucky to have mild temperatures and plenty of sun. I arrived 30 minutes before the golden hour to find a spot before people began to arrive to watch the sun set. I spent approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours around this area waiting for the right light. My friends visiting from Florida felt that may have been a bit long in this area but the results were worth it.Lighting
The golden hour really pays off here, and would strongly recommend visiting before this rich light starts.Equipment
I used my Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 Pro lens, and an Orange MeFoto Roadtrip Travel Tripod, and Aputure remote control shutter Cable.Inspiration
I am lucky to live in a neighboring state, so I love coming into NYC to take advantage of it beauty. Having walking the bridge may times, I felt it was time to get this shot. I also spent time walking around to find an interesting point of view. My first attempt was blocked due to protest marches on the bridge the week before, so it made it challenging to get to the bridge. A few weeks later I planned to get there earlier and this paid off.Editing
I used Adobe Lightroom to do minor adjustments. In my camera bag
I really like how light and comfortable my micro 4/3 Olympus OM-D E-M1 is and since it is so light weight I can bring a few extra items with me for the day. I normally take 3 lenses with me, but on for this trip I took 5. My Olympus M.Zuiko 12-40mm F2.8 PRO is my goto lens and is great for street and landscape photography. My 2nd lens is the Olympus 75mm F1.8 lens, and is tack sharp with creamy backgrounds. The 3rd lens in my bags is the Olympus 40-150mm F2.8 PRO lens and I also use the 1.4 teleconverter if necessary. I also carry Lee ND filters and circular polarizer filters. My Orange MeFoto Roadtrip Travel Tripod is a must for long exposure photography. I pack two speed lights with gels into my Thinktank Shape Shifter backpack just incase I a situation arises.Feedback
I recommend taking your time to come early and pick your spot since this is a popular area. You might want to avoid popular skate boarding spots as this seems to be a popular area for that activity. Walking the bridge area from both sides and use an app like LightTrac to see when are where the sun will set on the day you will be there. Once you think you have found your spot, set your lens to manual focus while the light is still bright and use the magnify function to make sure you are tack sharp. This is the time to find the best focal point so try a few different spots and review before you lock it in. If you camera has focus peaking this is also great to see in live view what is in focus. A second camera body might also come in handy to capture other events while you wait for the right lighting. Lastly use a remote shutter or set your timer to avoid camera shake.
