Behind The Lens

Location

Having lived in the Midwest most of my life I never saw grasshoppers so big until I moved to Florida. This fellow was shot in the bushes outside my lanai when I lived in Jacksonville.

Time

I was relaxing on the lanai one afternoon when I noticed this big fellow climbing around in the bushes and grabbed my camera. When I got outside he was slowly climbing up on the sprinkler head and then carefully raised himself up a bit and looked right at me, as luck would have it!

Lighting

I seldom use a flash, preferring natural light. It was mid afternoon and the bush was under the eave of the house.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Nikon D5000 with a 55-200 lens.

Inspiration

I was fascinated with the size and coloring of the grasshoppers there and simply couldn't resist an opportunity to take a few shots.

Editing

At the time I took this picture I was just getting back into photography after about 30 years (life sometimes has other plans for us) and was just getting familiar with digital cameras, and hadn't figured out raw files and the like, so this was shot in jpeg and only cropped slightly.

In my camera bag

This year I stepped up a bit from the D5000 to the D7100 and still use the same 55-200 lens for most of my shooting. I find it gives me quite a bit of versatility, allowing me to take decent landscapes as well as get in close when I need to.

Feedback

Patience is key and often pays off with really nice shots. I got very lucky with this shot, the perfect composition presented itself within a few seconds, most times it's a waiting game. I've literally spent a couple of hours sitting in a patch of flowers to get a decent shot of a butterfly.
