Location
We lived along the river in Wisconsin and my neighbor had a small pond fed by a natural spring, which didn't freeze when the river did. During the morning and evening the ducks would gather there.Time
This picture was taken as the sun was rising through the trees, about 45 minutes or so after sunrise. The wind chill that day was well below zero and I hate the cold, but couldn't resist the light that morning and spent about half an hour taking shots.Lighting
Nature puts on a fantastic display sometimes and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time!Equipment
I'm not sure which camera it was shot with as I upgraded to a better Nikon around that time. I'm sure the lens was the 55-200 as that's typically the one I use most often. I did use a tripod, a must these days (the older you get the more they become a necessity).Inspiration
The pond full of ducks, bathed in such beautiful light with steam rising off the water was simply magical. No photographer could resist a lure like that!Editing
Basically all I did was tweak the colors a bit in Lightroom. I'm not real good at "processing", I have very basic skill in that area and thankfully I got a shot that didn't need much help from me!In my camera bag
I currently have a Nikon D7100 camera, a Nikon18-140 1:3.5-5.6 lens and Nikon 55-200 1.4-5.6 lens (my favorite)Feedback
Always have your camera nearby, you never know when everything will come together just perfectly. You can scout out places that are amazing, but you always have to wait on the light in photos like this. If it weren't for the light I doubt it would have been such a good photo. Patience pays off.
