Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Austin, Texas just north of the city in Mayfield Park near Mount Bonnell.

Time

This photo was taken in the early afternoon hours, I stopped at this amazing park after a hike with my husband up Mount Bonnell.

Lighting

This photo was taken in open shade in the early afternoon and this amazing bird thought I had bread and wanted to be fed so he came right up to me.

Equipment

I took this photo with my Sony A57, it was one of my first images taken after choosing to get some formal education in photography and before I upgraded my equipment and it showed me that great images can be produced even with a modest camera when armed with the right skill set, my settings were f5.6 1/160 ISO160. I took this image hand held, no flash and no tripod in manual mode.

Inspiration

It was my first time at this park and preserve situated in North Central Austin Texas. Everything about the park was beautiful and as I noticed all these Peacocks, I could not help but document them. They are such beautiful, colorful birds and I am in love with their personalities.

Editing

I did some basic post process as far as bringing up the highlights and lowering shadows a bit but not much post was needed.

In my camera bag

I usually keep my camera, now a Sony A77mark II and a minimum of three lenses. A Tamron 24-70 2.8 almost always on my camera, as well as a Tamron 70-300 and my Sony 50 1.8. My next big purchase will be a Sigma art!!!! Dreaming about that one. I also try to always two backup batteries and my Nissin flash, as well as a tripod or Mono pod attached.

Feedback

My best advise for shooting wild animals and birds is to let them approach you, if they are not dangerous that is. Give them their space and capture what you see, they are most beautiful when captured in their natural environment. They are never going to pose for you and you don't want to scare them away. If you are shooting birds or larger wildlife, do so with a tripod or Mono Pod and a good long lens with a fast shutter and a good lens.
