Congratulations on winning the "Ice in nature" photo challenge. I really enjoyed this image.
While the composition and mood were awesome, other photos had this as well. I chose your image as a winner based on how you manage to define color saturation and highlights and made them noticeable without creating something surreal or oversaturated.

Congratulations.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture on a Holland America cruise in Glacier Bay, Alaska.

Time

The shot was taken in the early afternoon after a morning rain.

Lighting

The light was real sketchy. The sun never broke through the over cast sky, but there was enough light to provide a nice reflection of Marjarie Glacier. Lighting is usually a problem at that time of day, but I got lucky this time. That soft light literally made the ice glow.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 16-85mm lens on a Slik tripod. No filters were used.

Inspiration

The over cast sky and the glow of the glacier really set the mood for this shot. You really felt like you in a far away place and time.

Editing

I used LightRoom highlight features to bring out the glacier reflections and cut back the clarity about 10% to get the silkiness to the water.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D90, a Tokina 11-16mm wide angle, Nikon 16-85mm and Nikon 80-200mm lenses

Feedback

Look for the light to set a mood and capture a feeling for the shot. Don't be discouraged if the light isn't perfect, you can often bring it out afterwards in Lightroom or Photoshop. And, using a panorama crop often helps you to emphasize the focal point of "landscape" composition. And, sometime less is more when it comes to post processing.
