Location
I took this photo at Brandelhow Jetty on Derwentwater in the Lake District, UK.Time
I was up early for sunrise and by the time I had got to this location and settled on a composition it was just past 6am. It is great to get out early in the morning, so peaceful with only the bird song to keep you company.Lighting
To get this image I needed to wait until the sun was in just the right position. I needed it to be rising just over the fell so I could get the reflection and the star burst I wanted.Equipment
I took this photo using a Nikon D750 with 24-70mm f2.8 lens attached. This was a 1.3 sec exposure so I needed to use a tripod, I use the Winston tripod by 3 Legged Thing. I also used Kase Filters to balance the exposure.Inspiration
I have seen many inspiring images here on ViewBug and social media platforms with a jetty or pier as the subject. These images give me lots of ideas of how I might capture my own images including these objects.Editing
Yes, I used Adobe Lightroom to perform basic edits on the image and increase the contrast. I also used it to change the white balance to add a warmer feel.In my camera bag
Recently I have been carrying less lenses with me and tend to only take out 2 lenses. I take my Nikon D750 with either the 24-70mm or 16-35mm along with my 80-400mm. Due to the distance I have been walking with my gear I find it more important to plan and carry less weight. I also carry Kase Filters and 3 Legged Thing tripod.Feedback
Something I have heard many photographers say, particularly landscape photographers, is to get to your desired location early. Give yourself plenty of time to find the composition you want and then wait for the light to come. The getting there early is probably the easier part, it's the waiting that is the difficult bit, especially if you are in a location where you have found several compositions. You don't want to miss the perfect conditions on either of them but unless you have several cameras to hand you will most likely miss a few. Hence why planning is key, knowing exactly in your mind what you want to capture. Take this image for example if I had moved and not waited for the conditions I was after then the image would be very different. It would not have the same look and feel and the composition wouldn't work as well.
