Location
The photo was taken locally at a small lodge. It's a great place for the dogs to play and is usually quiet so the dogs can be themselves without any distractions.Time
It was taken mid morning. I love taking photos of dogs. I know a local dog walker and I regularly join him to photograph his clients dogs. I get some great experience and he gets to provide his clients with some great pictures which helps his business. I do this around work obligations so I have little control over time. I take every opportunity as it comes.Lighting
Well as it was mid morning the light wasn't all that great. The lodge was a great place to shoot as its quiet well covered with even, flat light. I had to dial in some extra ISO to get the shutter speed I wanted for the correct exposure. I shot raw so was able to lift the shadows in post.Equipment
Just me and a nikon d7000 with 70 200 2.8 lense. Lightroom for the post processing.Inspiration
I love taking photos of dogs and it has become a passion. I always try to capture the breeds personality in my photos and although I didn't have any sheep to hand I wanted to capture that endless energy that Border Collies possess. The dog in this photo is called Ace and he was with two of his friends retrieving the ball from the lodge As he left the lodge I noticed the water trails. It took quite a bit of trial and error to get the shit I wanted. The water trails and the look.in Aces eyes is what makes this photo one of my favourite shots.Editing
I dont do anything fancy. I use lightroom and photoshop. I like to keep a clean background so might remove any distracting spots. I had to lift the shadows and introduce a bit more contrast to the image. Sharpening and noise reduction and that was about it with this shot.In my camera bag
I have recently gone down the mirror less route and now have the Nikon Z6. The d7000 was overdue an upgrade. I still have the 70-200 VRii 2.8 which is my go to. I also use the 24-70 F4 lens that came as a kit on the Z6 which I have been impressed with. Treats, toys and a towel for all that drool. I also sometimes use a phone app with squirrel noises which is great for those cute head tilt shots.Feedback
Have patience and keep shooting until you get the shot you have in mind. Use high burst mode to increase your chance of nailing the shot. I use single point and back button focus as I find separating the focus and shutter release more intuitive. It can be tricky to achieve focus on a fast moving dog and better equipment would definatley help. Luckily Collies dont mind how many times the ball gets thrown into the water but other dogs might not be so accomodating. Only push the dog while it is enjoying itself and know when it's time to stop and try something else. Keep it fun at all times and don't forget those rewards.
