Behind The Lens

Location

Lower Lewis Falls near Cougar, Washington

Time

Around 9am.

Lighting

We had arrived early to wade up the river to shoot the falls from the bottom that day. When we got out of the vehicle we could see the spray and mist in the trees and hear the falls. We walked over to where one would typically get into the river to wade upstream, only to find the river was raging too hard to make the journey upstream. Rather disappointed we took some shots from up above near the parking area and suddenly the sunlight began shining through the trees and the falls mist! We got super excited and began shooting the emerging light through the mist and trees into the falls... Was a great morning!

Nikon D810 Sigma 24-70mm / 2.8 Induro Tripod / RRS BH-55 head F-Stoppers Bag

Inspiration

Had been planning a trip to this location for months from my home in Colorado. My friend Shaun Peterson has a great shot from here.

Editing

I did initial edits on Adobe Camera Raw, then final edits in Photoshop

In my camera bag

Currently I carry: Nikon D810 Sigma 24-70 Tamron 15-30 Sigma 70-200 Sigma 35mm Nikon 50mm Nikon 70-300 RRS BH-55 head Induro Tripod 2 cowboy studio video lights Wireless remote and a wired remote as well

Feedback

Get there EARLY, and set up, ALWAYS. Be patient and wait past the “best light time” because sometimes nature will fool you and the best time comes before or after the time you think will be best... Sometimes 40 minutes before sunrise or 40 minutes after sunset has amazing light. Patience is the key
