Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in a small cave or rather a rock overhang in Malta.

Time

The shot was taken during the day. While I usually try and avoid lunch time sun, sometimes with a longer shoot you cannot avoid it. The cave however gave enough shade.

Lighting

I used my bin Sunbounce Reflector to get light into the shaded cave. This really helped to pop the colours a lot. Luckily on that day I had the designer with me as well, so she was able to assist with the reflector. Otherwise it is not easy to use if you are by yourself

Equipment

I used my 5d mark iii and had 24-70 and 70-200 with me and played around with both lenses a lot. Other than that, had the above mentioned Sunbounce Reflector and a monopod with a clamp that could help with the reflector if I did not have a helping hand. It was a rather remote spot, so we had to carry everything across rocky terrain

Inspiration

loved the little hiding spot. It gives some shade during peak time and with that, great for the models eyes.... The reflector helps greatly to add light into the shot

Editing

Mostly skin retouching on photoshop and some light correction in Lightroom

In my camera bag

These days I have my 5d iii as well as R6ii with me. At least 24-105 lens and 70-200 f2.8 and often 50mm. Multiple cards are a must. Though the above lenses are my usual go to, it depends on location I travel to. For safaris I add some big zoom lenses (usually 300mm f2.8 and the 400mm f5.6 and exchange the 24-105 with 15-35mm lens for some wide angle shots. If street only, then I might skip the 70-200 and even the 24-105 and just go with the light and small 50mm

Feedback

Look around and see what spots you can find. A large reflector is a must. However, I tried similar shot at a later stage and I was not as happy with the results.... so it comes down to right light, model, design....
