Location
This photo was captured at a farmhouse kitchen that was being used as a setup for the television show "Food Quest" that airs on A&E staring Kim Alexis and Mario Lopez. The North Dakota Soybean Council is sponsoring the show to help promote soyfoods. I was invited by the North Dakota Soybean Council to watch their setup and photograph during the soyfoods portion of the show.Time
It was mid-morning in August and the sunlight was bright. The farmhouse kitchen had ample light that filtered through windows and deck doors. It was the last week in July when the shoot took place.Lighting
The lighting was bright, but when I uploaded the photos to the computer the white balance was way off. It was more golden than blue. I decided to work with the white balance by correcting it in both photoshop and lightroom.Equipment
Nikon D750 and a Nikkor 60mm Macro. No flash or tripod.Inspiration
As I was patiently waiting for a chance to photograph the food after the videographers had their opportunity, I noticed the red raspberries in the foreground with the blue and white bowl in the back. I wanted to get my focus correct and really zoned in on the raspberries and mint leaf on top of the soy chocolate mouse. It gave it a layering affect which I'm very happy how it turned out.Editing
I definitely played with the white balance on this photo and once I got it light and airy with a cooler tone, I did take it into lightroom to enhance the raspberries just a bit.In my camera bag
In my Tamarac bag I typically have my Nikon D750 full-frame camera with a few Nikkor lenses. I have a 24-120mm for wide angle zoom shots, a 70-200mm for shots where I need to zoom or would like some nice bokeh and my 60mm for macro shots or portraits. I also have clear uv filters for each lens along with a polarized filter for the wide angle. To keep the lenses and the filters clean I ALWAYS have my Lens Pens. They are my favorite in my bag!!!Feedback
When photographing food pay particular attention to the surroundings and what is making the plate look spectacular. In this instance, I used raspberries in the foreground; my subject was the chocolate soy mousse with a beautiful mix of raspberry and a mint leaf for accent; and in the background the blue striped mixing bowl. I set u my shot that way. Don't be afraid to try different angles and perspectives. I also wasn't afraid to do some post-processing to get the lighting perfect.
