Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my kitchen table with a home studio lighting setup.

Time

I took this photo in the middle of the day.

Lighting

I used two standard soft boxes on either side of her slightly to the front to illuminate her features and really accentuate her puppy dog eyes.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D800, and a tripod for this. I bought the glasses in the Target dollar section.

Inspiration

Weens is the light of my life. She's my faithful companion, and has been my side kick for 6 years. She will do anything for a carrot, and I wanted to do something with Valentine's Day props. She actually didn't hate wearing the glasses to my surprise. Weens is a very easy going dog, and even has an instagram. She's been to over 7 states in her short 6 years of life.

Editing

I did retouch the image in Lightroom. I used a grunge look to over sharpen the image. I upped the clarity, and decreased the saturation a touch. The added clarity helped bring out the bright spots on the plastic in the glasses, and her eyes.

In my camera bag

Oh my. This completely depends on how heavy I want my bag to be. When I want to pack light I usually carry my Nikon D800, and a speedlite flash. I also usually carry a 50 MM lens 1.4 and a wide angle lens 14-24mm 2.8 both Nikon lenses. I always pack a manfrotto tripod, and now I also take pictures with my Iphone X.

Feedback

Use bribery! The only way to get good puppy dog shots is find something that motivates the dog to go into work mode. My dog knows if I have my camera and lighting set up that she's probably going to get a treat (carrot) out of it. She now will try to sit with clients I'm taking portraits of in order to try to get fed! Weens is really calm, and very easy going I knew she wouldn't hurt herself or try to jump off the table. Safety is just as important.
