Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the best examples of French Gothic architecture anywhere, and it is one of the largest and most well-known churches in the world. Known as Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris), it is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris. It contains the cathedra of the Archbishop of Paris, a reliquary, which houses some of Catholicism's most important relics, including the purported Crown of Thorns, a fragment of the True Cross, and one of the Holy Nails.
Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the first buildings to use the flying buttress, although additional support has been added when cracks began to appear. Construction began in 1163 during the reign of Louis VII and was deemed complete in 1345. There was damage during World War II. It seems that restoration, repair, upgrades, etc could continue forever.
I think it must be one of the most visited cathedrals in the world. I shared it that day with about 10,000 of my closest friends......
