It was the very last night I stayed at the Canadian Rockies back in October 2013. Only 2 nights out from the 2 weeks with a clear sky allowing me to capture some decent night shot under the extreme dark environment.

Amazing work! This is the most creative and skilled shot of what seems to be one of the most photographed places in the world! I don't feel as much of a need to go here after viewing this most wonderful capture! It would be highly unlikely that I could see a better image of this place, even live, after seeing this photo....Thank You! Exceptional job!!!!!!

This is an amazing shot!! Beautifully composed and beautifully created, easily one of the best shots I've seen :) I understand that you have a blog, would be awesome if you explain your work process for this image in your blog? I'm especially interested in if the moon was out that night and what causes the difference in lighting, is this a night HDR sort of image, I mean how cool would that be!?

Location
Moraine Lake in Banff National Park, AlbertaTime
Midnight in October (Night time hours are very different in the summer!)Lighting
It was a moonless night without any lights this evening. All it got is the ambient lights. And by ambient lights, I mean the lights from the stars!!Equipment
Canon 6D with Samyang 14mm f/2.8 on tripod, no flashInspiration
I've been trying to find places with the least amount of light pollution to photography the beautiful starry night sky the last 2 years. The great Canadian Rockies is an ideal place for that as I'm located in Vancouver, BC. And Moraine Lake is one of the iconic location of the Canadian Rockies for some astrophotography.Editing
As mentioned there is only ambient lights from the stars. So I have to do 2 exposures to capture this image. One for the background captured with ISO8000 20 sec @ f/2.8. Another exposure for the foreground using ISO400 10 minutes @ f/2.8 and Blended them together in PS. There are also adjustments in both Camera RAW and Photoshop. Techniques including Digital Blending, Layer Masking, and all kinds of Curves, Levels, Contrast, etc.In my camera bag
Canon EOS 6D, T3i, EF 24-105mm f/4L, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, EF 200mm f/2.8L, Samyang 8mm f/3.5, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, Circular Polarizer, ND filter (both 77mm). Interval Timers, 2 x Tripods, And sometimes a Motion Dolly for taking time lapse photosFeedback
Some preparation is almost mandatory. Things like moon cycle of the months and/or moonrise moonset time. Using some applications to find out direction and time of when the milkyway appear. Technically, camera setting can be various from place to place depending on how dark the location is. Bring a headlamp!! And most importantly, don't be scare of the dark night as a lot of people do when they first try. And for this kind of photography, the darker, the better the result will be!! And you will see how the ambient starlights allow you to see things with your naked eyes!!
