Location
My daughter was sitting on the couch with our dog near my office at the time.Time
This was in the evening, after dinner, likely around 6pm.Lighting
It was simply indoor fluorescent lighting.Equipment
Nikon D700, AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4DInspiration
Nothing. It was a total accident. I was messing with my menu and settings, and held my camera up to take a shot and test it, and ended up with a moment I knew I wanted to keep.Editing
Since I didn't mean to take the shot, there was no removing distractions in camera. The original image showed the couch and room. So I took this image into photoshop, masked out the background, then added a radial gradient and textured backdrop. I cleaned up flyaways, sharpened, and smoothed things out, and I also painted a couple of her nails with a brush as her nail polish was chipped and off two nails altogether. In my camera bag
Wide Angle 12-24 4, Normal Prime 50mm 1.4D, Macro Prime 105mm 2.8, Telezoom 70-300 4-5.6, a continuous LED for my hotshoe, extra batteries, charger, sd cards, and I have my tripod attached to the side most times.Feedback
Connection is so important in photography. Whether you accidentally catch it without time to remove distractions, or you catch connection intentionally but don't like something else in the shot you took, don't just automatically toss it. Give it a chance in Photoshop and see if you can save the moment with a clean edit. You just never know. We're ordering this in a large print for the house, a total surprise shot.
