My eldest, my most introspective and a lover of all things art. When I asked her how a shoot designed her way would go, we developed this concept to showcase who she is. Girly girl dress with converse sneakers, just her and nature and her art supplies. Taken on our ranch in upper east TN. Taken a couple weeks after the last birthday of her childhood, 17. This composite was pieced together of various final images from the shoot.

Location
In the woods of our 60 acre horse ranch. It's such a lovely property, a photographer's dreamland really. We have lots of beautiful texture and lighting from nature trails through the woods to wide open hay fields, all with lots of great content like a huge old barn and rusted farm vehicles. Probably 90 percent of my sessions take place here on the ranch.Time
It was 7pm in February in upper east TN. My daughter had recently gained an interest in photography due to a class offered at her high school, and I remember even her lighting up when she saw the lighting in that area of the woods. We both knew it would be perfect for the session. It was weaving into the woods in these beautiful large pockets as the sun set.Lighting
No light augmentation used for this image. Just natural light from the golden hour, subject positioning, and a wide aperture. I shot this with a Nikon D700, an ancient but reliable camera, not the low-light beast though like my D750. Nevertheless, my ISO was able to stay at just 200. The lighting really was perfect on its own.Equipment
Nikon D700, Nikon 50mm 1.4DInspiration
My daughter herself. In fact, this was a sort of team project between her and me, and she helped design this concept from start to finish. I wanted something that really spoke of who she is during this milestone time of her life. She had just had her last childhood birthday, 17. She's introspective, loves dressing up, but is down to earth, loves art, loves nature. This, this is all about her, every piece of it.Editing
Yes. I first edited a variety of images from the session. This was the final one to piece together, a composite using others from the session. I color-toned the image for added visual impact using luminosity masks. The red, amber gold, and brown represent the warm harmonious spirit she has, with the pops of cool tones representing the fact she sings her own tune, always something just a bit different about her than the rest, and that, like her, is beautiful. The leaves swirling, well... what's a conceptual image of a teenager without the world swirling about? :)In my camera bag

These are the kinds of images that allow you to really get your creative juices flowing. If you could do a session, any session, to showcase who you really are, what would that be like? What clothing? What colors? What would you be doing? These are all the kinds of questions I asked my daughter when developing this concept. It was really lots of fun and even a little therapeautic for me as a mom who is watching my first baby transition to adulthood and define herself.
