The Imperial Moth is not a tiny cute little moth flying around your lamps. This is one big guy-gal! This one was about 5 inches across!! He was, unfortunately, on an ugly screen door, so I placed him on a nice textured background that shows him off nicely. If you look closely (how far do you want to get....), you'll see the back of the head seems to be a face, mouth and all. I don't think it is, although I didn't actually pick him up and examine his underside. Even though they're harmless, they're big, furry, and, basically not something I personally want to handle.
The Eacles imperialis is a member of the family Saturniidae and subfamily Ceratocampinae. The wingspan of an adult is between 3 1⁄8 and 6 7⁄8 inches. Looks like this one was about medium to large.

Take a bow for this incredible shot! I always love all the details one can see in an insect, especially one you hone in one. Perfection!
