Behind The Lens

Location

On the Ardgowan estate in the village of Inverkip which has been 800 years in the making - This is one of many country Estates in Scotland.

Time

Although there are tracks leading the viewer 'into' this image it was captured relatively early in the morning. In winter here in Scotland, as we're so far north, our days can be as short as seven hours and it's often not proper daylight until mid morning. .

Lighting

I love the winter light as with us being so far north the sun is always low in the sky at this time of year. This provides long and interesting shadows which add to the atmosphere and overall feel of landscape captures.

Equipment

I used my canon 5D MKII, a Manfrotto tripod with a hydrostatic ball head and mt 24-70mm L Zoom lens. Although there is generally plenty of light, in particular when there is snow on the ground, I always carry my tripod when my envisaged images are landscapes. As well as allowing me to use slower shutter speeds to maximise depth of field, it also forces me to think more about the composition and resulting output.

Inspiration

Leading lines, rural setting, winter trees providing stark contrast - super conditions for image making.

Editing

Collated in Lightroom and processed initaily as RAW file in photoshop. Then removal of a couple of dust spots which were showing on my sensor. .

In my camera bag

Canon 5DMKIII Body, 24-70mm 2.8, 24mm Tilt and Shift, and 70-200mm 2.8 L Lenses. I carry ND filters and my flash in case I'm lucky enough to find subjects where I am close enough to be able to add 'fill' if there's sufficient interest. Oh, and my tripod!

Feedback

Consider the time of day, position of the sun, and always use a tripod. As an aside, wear suitable clothing for winter conditions and ensure someone knows in general where you are and roughly when you intend to return. Most importantly enjoy your photography, the great outdoors and never tire of the wonders of mother nature.
