Location
This shot was taken in the kitchen of our house. The scene was set up on our kitchen table. I don't have access to any studio so I tend to use what space I can in the house which usually means a bedroom, our kitchen or our sitting room.Time
I took the shot back in March of 2016. It was early afternoon between 1 and 2pm which gave me plenty of time to set up the scene in our kitchen and get my shots before clearing the area in good time prior to the evening meal.Lighting
The lighting for the shot came from the window. Due to restricted space I used a very small aperture of f22 with a shutter speed of 2 seconds. I wanted the entire shot in focus.Equipment
For this shot I used my Nikon D90 with the Nikkor 18-105 kit lens. The camera was on a tripod. No flash used just natural daylight coming in through the window. The camera was in aperture priority with settings of f22 giving a 2 sec exposure. I used an infrared trigger to activate the shutter. The original image was shot in RAW format.Inspiration
It was while we were doing our weekly shop that I happened to notice the various breads that were on sale in the local supermarket. I thought that a variety of breads would make a good still life scene. So I set up the scene with the breads and added butter and jams as well as some kitchen utensils and a vase with some flowers. I thought the breads would look good in the wicker basket and after re-arranging the scene a few times I added the towel and settled for this set up.Editing
I added a texture layer (mainly for the background) in Photoshop and did a bit of localized light painting, dodging and burning, of the RAW file in Lightroom to enhance the overall look of the shot.In my camera bag
Back when I took the shot I used my Nikon D90 along with the Nikkor 18-105 kit lens. Nowadays I use my Nikon D850. I carry two Tamron G2 lenses, the 24-70mm f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8. I also carry my SB-910 speedlight. I carry spare batteries for both the camera and the flash and I always carry my wired remote trigger for tripod shots but I tend to use the camera timer for these shots most of the time. I also have my Black Rapid strap which i feel gives good camera support over the shoulder and away from the neck. Although not in my bag, I tend to take my tripod when I go out to shoot.Feedback
I didn't have any idea that I was going to set up and take this shot before I saw the breads in the supermarket. So if something inspires you or you get an idea for a shot then go with it but have patience and take time to plan and set up the shot. The shot may take many attempts and set up changes but stick with it and you'll get the result in the end.
