Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo here in Germany inside a park.Time
The image is taken in the afternoon of a warm and sunny Saturday in August.Lighting
I used natural light. The sun in the back of the girls gave them some glow in the hair and in front of them I've had a reflector to balance the light.Equipment
I took the image with an old f1.8 85mm lens attached to my full-frame D600. To balance the backlight situation and light up the models, I used a reflector behind me to the left.Inspiration
We had a themed shooting that afternoon outside and used the natural resources the location offered to us. The two girls know each other for many, many years. During the shooting, I came up with the idea to use their relationship as an intimate image of their friendship. So, there was not much direction necessary to get this image.Editing
I usually only do some small adjustments in raw development with Capture NX2, like saving the highlights, lightening up the darks, and post-sharpening. In this case, I intensified the saturation a bit and I also removed a few blurred blossoms between the grass in the foreground. These unsharp colorful spots distracted from the girls. In my camera bag
The contents of my bag varies much, depending on the reason for a specific trip. For my travel photography, I have a 24-120, an 80-400 (sometimes 70-300 to save weight), and a fisheye lens. For certain trips, the equipment is completed by a 14-24 ultra-wide-angle lens or a teleconverter. For my model shootings, I only use prime lenses of 50, 85, and 105mm and sometimes 20mm. They are all f1.8, except the 105 which has f2.8. I have a remote shutter release, 2 additional batteries and 7 SD cards (2 * 64, 2 * 16, 3 * 8 GB).Feedback
I'd always recommend, paying very much attention to the available light and balancing it right during the shooing. It's way easier to photograph it right from the beginning than correct it in post-procession. It's much more work to be done and the image quality might decrease when changing too much in post-processing.
