Location
A section on the River Avon one of the regular fave spots that I shoot within a 5 mile radius of Amesbury, Wiltshire, my home base , This particular shot is one of 3 variants on a very special morning , The first shot was purely for the Landscape scene before without any swans ,however I was aware of a pair of swans making their way slowly upriver towards me , it was a question of waiting for the right moment , and nothing here was rushed other than capturing the pair in the third shot in the right place of the frame .Time
09-20 a very cold frosty morningLighting
With the sun still low in the sky and so much white with frost it was already a monochromatic scene and even diffused light through cloud here enhanced through HDREquipment
For this shot I was using my Canon 100D Sigma 17 -70mm most used and favoured lens ,Polarized circular filter .Inspiration
Just looking out of the window was enough inspiration to get out , a coffee to go , camera kit and warm clothing , set off just after 8 am , this was one of those rare weather occurrences , Hoare frost all around , it does not last that long , but with the low cloud and low sun the conditions stayed pretty constant and cold , I just done a normal circular route around my area , stopping at spots I know well and can where I can park up safely , head to particular scene's and get as many shots as possible on this great morning ,Editing
Yes ,shot in RAW , and adjusted colour temperature slightly in Digital photo professional to enhance the coldness of the scene , and yes , as cold as it looks , again with the same program using HDR Tool , with a slight adjustment of saturation and contrast , then transferring to CS5 where I use some old school techniques of dodging and burning selected areas to bring out detail along the bank with reflections , midtones , shadows and highlights .In my camera bag
Far too much , It is the norm for me to carry most of my kit ,2 bodies ,lots of fully charged batteries , snacks a plenty , Sigma 17-70 and 10 - 24 mm lens , Canon 100-400L , Canon 100L f2.8 , various filters ,cable releases / timers . Manfrotto be free tripod , this is small compact and can be set up low with legs splayed , also use for car roof set up , great for varied angles of shot . plus some various light painting torches , not uncommon for me to be at a venue for best part of the day then decide to stay on for some night shooting , I tend to make the most of conditions and time .Feedback
Just have your kit ready and with you where possible, you really never know what could be in store , the best shots are the ones I have missed through not having kit , take your time don't rush shots , analyse shots after shoot , you learn far more by being your own critique , be patient watch and wait , concentrate on composition , let the camera do the work , it is a tool after all , just get familiar with your camera and lens variations f stop settings / combinations , if you can do this , you can concentrate on composition more so . at the end of the day ,it is all about right time right place . find the place , remember it then go shoot it at it's best ,
