Behind The Lens
Location
This photograph was taken on the campus of Utah Valley University, where I am employed. The campus has a somewhat coordinated and, I think, interesting architecture.Time
I waited until late morning, when the shadows were very prominent, to take the photo.Lighting
The lighting is obviously natural, and it is really the focal point of the photo. I like the juxtaposition of the heavy light-colored cement beams and the intricate, dark shadows cast by the building. They combine with the black sky to produce a complex network of abstract shapes that I find pleasing.Equipment
The photograph was made with a Nikon 14-24mm lens (at a 14mm setting) mounted on a Nikon D800e camera. For maximum resolution, the camera was mounted on a solid tripod.Inspiration
I had walked past the scene every day for several weeks, enjoying the complex patterns of shadows created by the architecture of the building. After noting the optimum time of day, I finally took my camera and tripod to campus and took the photograph.Editing
The photograph was converted to black and white in PhotoShop. I intentionally dropped the blue sensitivity to intensify the contrast between the sky and the light-colored cement. In my camera bag
Unless weight is an issue, my favorite combination is my Nikon D800e and Nikon 14-24mm lens. When hiking, I'll often opt for a mirrorless Sony Nex 6 or Canon EOS M camera instead, simply due to the lighter weight.Feedback
Captivating photographs can often be made in rather mundane places if we watch for interesting shapes and lighting. It is often abstractions of larger scenes that make the most engaging photographs.
