Location
The photograph was taken in the Coyote Buttes area of northern Arizona. This sandstone formation is commonly called The Wave.Time
The photo was taken at mid morning.Lighting
The lighting was quite flat, which I find typically works well for black and white photography.Equipment
The photograph was taken with a Wista 4x5 field camera and a Rodenstock 90mm lens.Inspiration
Coyote Buttes is one of the most popular places in the American West for photography. I was looking for something a bit different from the many brightly colored photos typical of the area. I looked for small, abstract sections that could be isolated from the larger formation and although the photo was shot on Fuji Velvia color transparency film, my intention going in was to convert it to black and white to highlight the form, tone, and texture of the scene.Editing
The conversion from color to black and white was done in PhotoShop. In my camera bag
I have retired my 4x5 equipment. As I've gotten older, weight has become an issue for me. These days, I carry a Nikon Z7 camera and I generally use a Nikkor 14-30mm lens. Although I own a number of good lenses, I am partial to the wide-angle.Feedback
The Coyote Buttes area is not to be missed. Sure, everyone's been there and we've all seen lots of photos of the place, but....
