A Girl In The Rain is an image I took to explore emotion within portraits whilst trying not to be to conventional. I am hoping that people can build on how the subject might be feeling and perhaps what lies ahead of her in the darkness... Who is she and why is she there?

A picture that makes me ponder, and a picture that is very beautiful. I especially like that you have included the dark space around the rain

Ok dude the umbrella being the source of light is genius. And how the light reflects off the water drops. Nice.

Fantastic image! I rate an image by one standard and that is "I wish I had taken it"

Location
I took this photo in field just outside of my back garden. It was very much an experiment for me so I am glad I did not have to go far in case I never got the shot.Time
The photo was taken at around 8pm. I was after the darkness so as long as it was later in the evening it was perfect and due to it being winter when the shot was taken it was dark pretty early!Lighting
The lighting is what makes this image what it is. I used one speedlight which my model was holding in front of her. The flash illuminates the the subject by bouncing off of the shoot through umbrella as well as the rain and a small area of the landscape. It was important that the shot was kept very dark, I wanted the model to be the focal point and also to add an interesting but non distracting aspect to the shot with the umbrella. The shot is about feeling alone and in need, the light symbolises a torch to show how vast, dark and potentially dangerous the surroundings are, and alone the girl is. I feel like the light of the umbrella symbolises a shield protecting her from the harsh environment that surrounds her.Equipment
I shot this using a Canon 5D MKIII with a 24-105mm f4 L. The model was holding a Canon 430EXII speedlight on a wireless trigger and a shoot through umbrella. I used a garden hose to create the effect of rain.Inspiration
My inspiration for this shot was my observation of my life as well as other people's lives. Who hasn't at some point felt lost or alone and as if the whole world is crashing down around them? Life is a blind journey that we all must take and we don't know what lies ahead of us but although it may be raining and cold today, we have to keep venturing forward.Editing
Not particularly, other than the usual sharpening and a small crop of the image. In my camera bag
Normally I have my Canon 5D MkIII as well as my trusty 24-105mm L lens. I haven't long moved in to full frame photography so I only have that lens and my 50mm f1.8 prime lens at the moment. I am hoping to save up money to buy a 70-200mm f2.8. I have my Canon 430EXIIFeedback
Just Experiment with Aperture and flash power, have fun! Technically this shot isn't particularly difficult but can look beautiful with different subjects and umbrella types.
