Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in the city of Guanajuato, in Mexico. Guanajuato is a wonderful place, a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Time

The trip to Guanajuato was a wonderful experience. As I recall, I took the photograph around 19:00. Luckily we were in summer (July) and that allowed the golden hour light create a beautiful image.

Lighting

Guanajuato has beautiful warm colors so the light in the golden hour highlights them even more. The evening light also allowed the shadows of the buildings were very soft, almost imperceptible, transforming the city in a very quiet place.

Equipment

The photos were taken with a Canon 60D camera with a 18-135mm lens, I used f/3.5 and a time of 1/400 sec, ISO 400. Unfortunately did not have a tripod.

Inspiration

The city is fully enjoyed from the place known as "El Pipila". It is impossible not to want to take one or many photographs of the entire city or some of its streets or buildings. Some years ago I took many pictures, but this time I wanted to take a panoramic as large as possible to capture its full beauty. The softness of light was another factor that inspired me to make the panorama.

Editing

My wish was to take a panoramic, so the post-processing was necessary. The panorama consists of seven photographs which were processed using Lightroom. Each photograph was made an adjustment of white balance to highlight the warm tones of sunset plus an adjustment to enhance contrast. Subsequently, the seven photographs were processed in Photoshop to merge them into a single image and to correct the distortion.

In my camera bag

Usually, I have a Canon D60 18-135mm Canon lens, a remote shutter, several memories, batteries charged, polarizing filters and cleaning equipment. When I'm taking pictures in low light I carry a compact tripod Manfrotto.

Feedback

Mexico is a paradise for photographers. Our country offers a huge amount of beautiful cities that can be explored on foot or can be admired from viewpoints. It is highly recommended to carry luminous lenses and a tripod because you can make spectacular night shots. It's fantastic to walk the streets and observe the activities of people, which are usually very friendly so you can photograph them without problems. Besides people, it is highly recommended to photograph the crafts as they are real works of art.
