Gorgeous!!! Love it! Two of my favorite things: sunsets/sunrises and lighthouses :). Congrats on being a finalist!

Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Peggy's Cove Nova Scotia, Canada. A must vacation stop for photographer's visiting the area. I recommend sticking around for Golden Hour and bring along a sturdy tripod in case its windy.

Time

It was early in the evening for a sunset shot but the sun was setting fast behind the buildup of clouds over the horizon and I only had one chance on my trip to capture a sunset of this Canadian iconic site. I took the picture on August 21, 2011 at 7:04 pm. It was windy and brisk for that time of year but well worth waiting for the right moment of the sunset.

Lighting

Capturing the dynamic range of this picture was challenging, I tried some gradient filters but my sky didn't seem right. In the end I opted my last shots without the filters by working on my exposure to capture the sky and I would work on adjusting the foreground exposure once back home.

Equipment

I had with me a Nikon D90, Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-105mm VR Lens a tripod and trigger release.

Inspiration

Peggy's Cove is an iconic picturesque site and was a must stop for my vacation. I had seen many pictures online and wanted to capture it in my own unique way. The big boulder with the huge crack and mossy patches gave me the foreground I was looking for. I setup the camera on the tripod behind the boulder lens level at the boulder height and composing my image with the lighthouse in the upper-right third.

Editing

I finalized the editing of this RAW picture in Lightroom with some slight brush burning in the sky area and some brush dodging of the foreground and shadow side of the lighthouse.

In my camera bag

Today I carry around a Nikon D610, I have a variety of lens from prime to telephoto. I always carry around my tripod and trigger release.

Feedback

My advice arrive early before sunset and take the time to compose your image, take some pictures before the sun starts setting and visualize the image you hope to capture. Make sure you have the elements needed to make a nice picture, foreground, subject in rule of thirds, leading lines etc. A safety advice for Peggy's Cove be aware of the tide and also the sea can be rough so be careful of how you venture on those rocks.
